What is IP Rating in Humanoid Robotics?
Standard measuring robot resistance to dust and water intrusion (e.g., IP54, IP67).
Higher IP ratings mean robots can work in harsher environments including outdoor, industrial, or wet conditions.
How IP Rating Works
IP ratings use a two-digit code: first digit (0-6) indicates dust protection, second digit (0-9) indicates water protection. IP54 means protected against dust (5) and water splashes (4) - suitable for indoor/light outdoor use. IP65 is dust-tight (6) and protected against water jets (5) - good for outdoor or washdown environments. IP67 is dust-tight (6) and can withstand temporary immersion (7). Testing involves exposing robots to standardized dust chambers and water spray/immersion for specified durations. Achieving high IP ratings requires sealed joints, gaskets, waterproof connectors, and protective coatings on electronics. Design tradeoffs exist between protection level, cost, weight, and thermal management.

IP ratings guide robot selection for deployment environments. IP20-IP40 robots work in clean indoor offices and labs. IP54 robots operate in light industrial or semi-outdoor settings. IP65 robots handle food processing environments requiring regular washdowns. IP67 robots work outdoors in rain or dusty conditions. Agricultural robots need high IP ratings for field deployment. Warehouse robots need moderate protection against dust. Clean room robots require special designs preventing particle generation. Marine and underwater robots use specialized waterproof designs beyond standard IP ratings.
